Los Angeles, CA — March 24, 2026 — It must be spring! Sixty years after its original release, Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys will be reissued as part of Interscope-Capitol’s Definitive Sound Series (DSS), with a limited run of 6,000 numbered copies.
The new edition presents the album in its original monophonic mix, as produced by Brian Wilson. The all-analog release is pressed on 180-gram Neotech VR900 vinyl at Record Technology, Inc. using a One Step process designed to reduce generational loss during plating. Each copy includes a certificate of authenticity documenting the mastering, plating, and pressing chain.

The release was mastered by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering using rarely accessed analog tapes dating to the early 1970s. According to the label, these tapes correspond to a 1972 pressing originally issued on Brother Records and distributed by Reprise. That version, long noted by collectors for its sound quality, served as the reference
point for the DSS edition.

Producer Tom “grover” Biery identified the tapes during archival research. Labeled “Reprise Master,” the tapes were determined to match the 1972 pressing based on running times and catalog references, suggesting they were used to cut the original lacquers at Artisan Sound Recorders. Biery stated that the source material had been largely unused in subsequent reissues.
The 1972 pressing has become a benchmark among collectors, with market value increasing significantly over time. Debate over the best-sounding version of Pet Sounds remains ongoing, with nearly 400 variants of the album in circulation worldwide.

Additional anniversary releases are also planned. Capitol/UMe will issue a 2LP Vinylphile Edition featuring both mono and stereo mixes, along with a Zoetrope vinyl version. A separate release, The Pet Sounds Sessions Highlights, will compile 25 alternate takes, a cappella recordings, and tracking sessions drawn from the 1997 box set The Pet Sounds Sessions.
I'm personally excited for this as I just added an original U.S. mono copy (Scranton/T 2458) to the permanent collection and look forward to comparing and contrasting. I've also got my 2006 40th anniversary copy (in yellow and green) which I assume is from a digital source, that copy is in both stereo and mono.
The DSS edition of Pet Sounds is available for pre-order now.
