Craft Recordings continues to expand its Original Jazz Classics (OJC) series with four notable reissues set for release this summer and fall. The latest batch includes albums from acclaimed artists Kenny Burrell, Kenny Drew, Frank Wess (with John Coltrane and others), and Sonny Criss. Each title has been remastered from the original tapes, cut AAA by Kevin Gray (with Ryan K. Smith handling the Kenny Drew album), and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI. Tip-on jackets replicate the original artwork, and digital versions will also be available in hi-res audio.

All titles are available for pre-order now. Kenny Burrell and Wheelin’ and Dealin’ will be released August 22, while Kenny Drew Trio and Sonny’s Dream arrive September 26.

Kenny Burrell – Kenny Burrell
Monochrome album cover of a person holding a guitar, with a black vinyl record beside it. Text reads "KENNY BURRELL/PRESTIGE CR00861."

Originally released in 1957, this tight, straight-ahead jazz set features baritone saxophonist Cecil Payne, pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Doug Watkins, and drummer Elvin Jones. Standouts include “Don’t Cry Baby” and “Drum Boogie.”

Frank Wess et al. – Wheelin’ and Dealin’
Blurry black-and-white image of skaters on a vintage album cover titled "Wheelin' & Dealin'" with red text. Vinyl record partially visible.

This 1958 session captures the energy of a spontaneous jam with Wess, Coltrane, Paul Quinichette, pianist Mal Waldron, bassist Doug Watkins, and drummer Art Taylor. The highlight: the 15-minute exploration “Robbin’s Nest.”

Kenny Drew – Kenny Drew Trio
Vinyl record beside album cover. Cover shows two men seated on the floor, one with a striped shirt. Text: "Kenny Drew Trio" in bold.

An underrated 1956 recording featuring Drew alongside Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones. The album includes lively takes on “Caravan” and “Blues for Nica,” showcasing both precision and personality.

Sonny Criss – Sonny’s Dream (Birth of the New Cool)
Album cover of "Sonny's Dream" by The Sonny Criss Orchestra with a vinyl record. Features a silhouette in orange and purple, and a photo of a man.

A 1968 release composed by Horace Tapscott, this orchestral jazz album blends hard bop, big band, and avant-garde elements. It stands as a powerful statement in the wake of Coltrane’s passing.

These reissues continue Craft’s mission of preserving classic jazz recordings with audiophile-level attention to detail, offering both longtime collectors and new listeners a chance to experience these works as originally intended.
