Miles Davis – The Complete Live at the Plugged Nickel 1965 Returns on Vinyl and CD for the First Time in 30 Years

Columbia/Legacy Recordings has announced the first wide reissue in three decades of Miles Davis – The Complete Live at the Plugged Nickel 1965. The set will be released on January 30, 2026, as part of the lead-up to next year’s Miles Davis Centennial.

The collection captures Davis’s Second Great Quintet—Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams—across two nights in December 1965 at Chicago’s Plugged Nickel club. The recordings, long regarded as a landmark in modern jazz, run more than seven hours and will be available in two formats:

• 10LP vinyl box set: newly designed slipcase, ten individual jackets, 40-page booklet.

• 8CD edition: same material and packaging in compact format.

Both versions include new liner notes by Syd Schwartz, alongside reprinted notes by jazz writer Bob Blumenthal.

Ahead of the full release, a standalone 2LP title, Live At The Plugged Nickel: December 23, 1965 – Second Set, will arrive on November 28 as part of Record Store Day’s Black Friday event.

The performances document a pivotal moment for the Davis Quintet. Shorter was just over a year into the band, and the group had recently recorded E.S.P. Drummer Tony Williams reportedly urged the others to play “anti-music,” prompting the musicians to deconstruct familiar material and reframe it onstage. Davis later explained: “We found ways to make the old music sound as new as the new music we were recording.”

Originally released in 1995 by Mosaic Records as a limited vinyl box set, The Complete Live at the Plugged Nickel has been out of print since. Its stature has only grown: The Guardian once called it “Maybe the best-ever representation of ‘the second great quintet’ at work... reinventing small-band jazz with an all-but-psychic flexibility of timing and on-the-fly harmonising.”

In the new liner notes, Schwartz writes: “The Plugged Nickel tapes don’t just capture great performances. They document a band revolutionizing improvisation in real time, welcoming surprise, discarding certainty, and turning ‘wrong’ notes into revelations.”
