A Recap of What's Being Pulled From the Stacks and What's Spinning On the Platter

The woody electric guitar tone of Tal Farlow is hard to miss. This coupled with his daring six-string flourishes makes 1969 exciting, especially as this date finds Tal finding his way back from a decade long retirement. This Bergenfield, NJ Prestige pressing isn’t in the best shape, but it’s a forgiving disc that sounds great. The album hasn’t had a reissue sing ‘87, maybe now is the time.

Happy birthday to the man in the suit, and – yes – we are still wondering where the highway goes to. I didn’t even realize I had a copy of this album which has recently been remastered and expanded. It is, however, the only version of - my favorite TH song - “This Must Be the Place” that I own as I don’t have “Speaking in Tongues“ from 1982.

I don’t always reach for my U.S. copy of “London Calling,” but when I do, I snap a photo. It needed a good cleaning anyway and - yes - it sounded excellent.

Who doesn’t love late 60s Zombies psych masterpieces? We all do, but don’t discount those early rock and roll singles - and deep cuts. A quick spin through their early catalog will reveal many sterling pop-rock tracks that you’ve probably never heard. Their early albums are tough to find on vinyl which is why this early 70s compilation is a terrific addition any library. It sounds good, it’s affordable and offers an admirable overview of the Zombies’ complete output; I’m grateful to have rescued this one from a neighbors’ basement!

Some excellent Sunday jazz from Joey Alexander, particularly from his latest release titled “Continuance”. Joey and I talk about his career and his terrific new album on this week’s episode of Radar. The vinyl pressing of this album is fantastic with nary a pop or click in sight, a great job from GZ Media in the Czech Republic. Check out Joey’s amazing story tomorrow at The Vinyl District or wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts.
